The Experience
Most surf photography happens on a screen with autofocus and a burst button. This is the opposite. You’ll shoot fully manual on film, where every frame is a decision, and you’ll make those decisions in the water, where the waves are.
You’ll learn to read the ocean, position yourself where the picture will happen, and swim back in with the shot. [Optional: Then close the loop in the darkroom.]
What You’ll Learn
1. Think Analog
Shoot fully manual. Aperture, ISO, film stock, focus, lighting, and lens choice, so every frame is intentional.
2. Read the Ocean
Time your entry, read waves, spot currents, and understand how the seabed shapes the break. Build the breath control and calm to stay comfortable out there, with apnea and relaxation techniques.
3. Move in the Surf
Duck diving, efficient swimming, mobility, and the strength to swim back in. Learn to keep clear of surfers and stay out of the way of the lineup.
4. Find Your Position
Stay ahead of the subject, work the shoulder of the wave, judge distance, meter the light, and anticipate movement before it happens.
5. Develop It Yourself (Extra)
Darkroom session: available upon request at an additional fee.
Your 6 Hours
Briefing & safety: Conditions, gear check, and the plan for the day
Analog & technique session: Exposure, film, lenses, and light-metering on the shore
In the water: Guided sessions on reading the break, positioning, and shooting
Debrief: Review the day and talk through your frames
Surf conditions decide the details. The plan adapts to the ocean, never the other way around.
Why 1:1?
Open water demands attention. Private instruction means:
Your instructor watches only you
Pace and technique are tailored to your level
Safety stays at the center of every session
Lessons adapt in real time to the waves and light
