The Azores are a group of islands that do not reward the faint of heart. For over 500 years this archipelago has bestowed fortune upon those who’ve dared to dream the impossible—in the face of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and rough seas, the mid-Atlantic teaches patience and inspires innovation. When I first met Pedro, I knew that I was standing in front of someone who comes from a long lineage of visionaries, embodying the ingenuity and tenacity of the Azorean people. Pedro’s project, @petesvolcanic_coffee, is emblematic of life in the Azores—a chain of islands forged by violent eruptions and destructive earthquakes—by harnessing the potential of the archipelago’s unique climate to grow coffee close to the Atlantic coast. Last December, we met up at his coffee plantation to document the plants’ growth and their fortune-bearing fruits. And it became clear that this revered plant had found a caring home in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, on the isles of the fortunate.
